Protein microarray technology has made enormous progress in recent years. It has been successfully applied for the identification, quantification and functional analysis of proteins in basic and applied proteome research. A variety of different analytical platforms have been developed that are likely to evolve into key technologies for the characterisation of complex samples. In this regard, multiplexed diagnostics are the long-awaited ascendance of ’omics into healthcare. The promise of multiple measurements to characterize complexity is finally being realized. Multiplexed diagnostics, which are combinations of independent measurements or discrete multivariate signatures, are enlightening physicians about improved diagnoses and predictions of responses to treatments and elevating the consistency and efficiency of the entire healthcare system, while all-powerful regulators watch from above with minimal interference. The ascendance of individual tests, however, is fraught with unstable reimbursement and an ever-intensifying storm of competition.
